"Happiness" (Hangul: 행복; Romanization: Haengbok) is the debut single by Red Velvet. The single as well as the music video was released on August 1, 2014. The song marks as being Red Velvet's first release under the "red" concept.

Description[]

The song is described as a vibrant urban Euro pop song with a great fusion of an intense synth sound and an African music beat. It undergoes various changes with diverse rap and vocals. It portrays the world from the perspective of young, innocent people who are untainted. It conveys a message that how you can feel empowered and love yourself more by appreciating the small joys in life.The song represents the group's "Red" sound.

The music video is filled with fantastic color schemes, diverse footage and animated scenes, exciting and energetic dance routine consisting of reggae steps and rhythmic movements. It was initially released on August 1 but then re-released on August 4, 2014 due to the controversial imagery concerning the Japan bombing. The group started promotions of the song on the day of its initial release.

During the month of July, it was announced by SM Entertainment that Irene, Seulgi, and Wendy will be in the upcoming girl group. On July 28, 2014, the music video teaser for "Happiness" was released. The teaser included Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, and Joy. On August 4, 2014, the music video was released.

Promotion[]

The music video originally was released on August 1 but was taken down due to controversial imagery concerning the Japan bombing and the 9/11 attacks. SM Entertainment released a statement saying the director just used a collage source of images and there was no intention behind it. The video was then re uploaded on August 4. They performed for the very first time on Music Bank on August 1, 2014..

Commercial Performance[]

During the week of August 3, 2014, it was announced that "Happiness" not only debuted but also peaked at number five on the Gaon Digital Chart. "Happiness" debuted at number four on Billboard's Word Digital Song Sales Chart. This made them the first K-pop girl group to send their debut single to the Billboard charts.
